Barbara Ashley

PRINCIPLE & OWNER 

Barbara Ashley School of Dance has been owned and operated by Barbara Ashley since 1990. From a very young age Barbara danced at a local dance studio and realized that there was nothing else she would rather do than to share her love of dance with others.

She traveled to Montreal, Quebec in 1989 to study privately with Pat Bouvier, and later moved to Hull, Quebec where she studied under Lucienne Cyr. Barbara received her Associates in both Ballroom and Latin with the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. She then returned to St. John's, NL to open her own studio; Barbara Ashley School of Dance Inc. Since then Barbara has been successfully running her business for over 31 years.

Throughout her teaching Barbara has continued her studies in Tap, Ballet and Modern. She has also dedicated her career to volunteering with her students at seniors homes, church events, private functions and more!

Today the studio continues to operate successfully from its location at 19 Brookfield Road, in St. John's, NL which has been the home of countless students sharing their love of dance.

  • 1st place for best performing group in the St. John's Downtown Christmas Parade for 7 consecutive years

  • Best Dance Studio for 5 consecutive years as voted by the NL Herald

  • Winner of the St. John's Downtown Christmas Parade Legend Award (St. John's 2013) 

  • Meet Me in St. Louis (HSH) - Choreographer

  • Choreographer for productions of: Cinderella , Hickory Dickory Dock, Narnia, Jack & The Beanstalk, Beauty & The Beast, & Rumpelstiltskin (St. John's Players)

Joanne Buckingham-Stockley

TEACHER

Joanne is Barbara's niece, so you could say that she was born a dancer. Joanne began dancing at the age of 2 taking on many styles of dance and has been hooked ever since. From a very young age she began assisting and helping out around her aunts studio. Joanne then began teaching jaznastics (acro) at the young age of 14. She has experience in all styles of dance, but her true passion is jazz. Joanne's fun loving spirit and passion for the studio is sure to make your child's dance experience an enjoyable one.

Joanne completed her Business Administration Diploma at College of The North Atlantic in 2010. She took on a work term with Eastern Health in St. John's, NL that year and has been working full time with the organization ever since.

Meghan Foley

TEACHER

Meghan started dancing at Barbara Ashley School of Dance at the age of 3. She began assisting in 2007 and quickly moved into a instructing position by 2008, teaching pre-ballet & jazz. Meghan has experience in multiple styles of dance, but her true passion is modern. Meghan's classes are filled with energy, as she aims to help her students achieve their best potential.

Meghan completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree at Memorial University, earning honours. During this time she also graduated completing her Bachelor of Arts degree with an Economics Major. She then continued her education at Dalhousie University and graduated from law school in 2019. Meghan is now working full time as an Associate at Roebothan McKay & Marshall in St. John's.

Sascha Gordon

TEACHER

Sascha started taking pre-ballet at Barbara Ashley School of Dance at the age of 3 and eventually branched into many different styles over the years. She began assisting in 2007, and shortly after became an instructor at the studio in 2008, teaching pre-ballet and hip-hop. Sascha has experience in multiple styles of dance, but her true passion is tap dancing. Sascha's students feed off of her passion & enthusiasm, as she dedicates herself whole heartedly to her students and the studio.

Sascha attended Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador and is now working full-time at Royal LePage Atlantic Homestead Ltd., an independently owned and operated real estate brokerage in St. John's, NL.

Katie Billard

TEACHER

Katie started dancing at the age of 3. It wasn't until the age of 16 that she became a dancer at Barbara Ashley School of Dance. Shortly after, Katie became a part of our team as she began teaching in 2011. She has experience in many styles of dance but she mainly focuses on modern and tap. Katie has a kind heart and you can't help but gravitate towards her positive personality and her helpful nature in the studio.

Katie attended Randolph Academy for The Performing Arts. She completed the Triple Threat program and was also awarded a Diploma in Performance Arts in 2016. Katie is currently attending Memorial University in St. John's, NL aiming to complete her joint bachelors degree in History and Political Science. 

Dance Accomplishments:

  • ISTD Graded Examinations -Jazz Bronze, Silver & Gold 

  • ISTD Modern Syllabus - Modern Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6

  • Achieved Jazz level 4, Ballet level 5 (both out of 6 levels) & tap level 4 (highest level) (Randolph Academy)

  • Wanna Dance Competition - Broadway Choreographer - Energy Plus Award (St. John's 2019)

  • Featured dancer and choreographer with Viva Show Choir (2012)

  • Featured dancer in productions of: Anything Goes (PMP 2012), Footloose (RAPA 2016), Our Divas Do Christmas (TaDa 2018)

  • Portrayed the dancing diva Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda (PMP 2019)

Michaela Mercer

TEACHER

Michaela began dancing at barbara ashley school of dance at the age of 4. She began assisting during classes in 2008 and took on a teaching position in 2013. Michaela also took on teaching at daycares and after school proframs, representing Barbara ashley school of dance. Although michaela has experience in many styles of dance she enjoys ballet and hip hop the most. Michaelas unique style is sure to make your class an exciting and unforgetable experience.

Michaela attended memorial university and later completed the office administrative, records and information management program at cna. In 2018 she obtained her diploma earning honours. Shortly after michaela began working at cna and she is currently working as an administrative assistant in the school of health sciences.

Dance Accomplishments:

  • Rock the rhythm workshops in (St. John’s 2012)

  • 5678 Showtime Competition competitor (St. John’s 2013)

  • Attended various styles of workshops through BASD with guest choreographers

  • Completed and recieved certificate for the high 5 training program (2013)

Melanie Smith

TEACHER

Melanie began dancing at the age of 2. She joined Barbara Ashley School of dance at age 3 and started assisting during classes in 2009. She began teaching in 2014 taking on many styles of dance, however her favourites are acro and tap. Melanie has an outgoing personality, which is sure to make her classes extra fun and enjoyable. 

Melanie is currently a full time student at Memorial University. She is in her fourth year of completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Police Studies and a minor in Sociology. During this time Melanie is also completing her certificate in Criminology. Although Melanie juggles a busy schedule she also works part-time at Service Master Restore as an office assistant.
